Overview
Popcart is a specialized mobile marketplace designed to bridge the gap between digital commerce and human connection. By enabling sellers to live-stream directly to their customers, the platform transforms the standard transactional experience into a transparent, real-time engagement that builds immediate buyer confidence.
Problem
In the rapidly growing world of digital commerce, there is a deepening "trust gap" between what a customer sees on their screen and what actually arrives at their doorstep.
Traditional e-commerce relies on static images and pre-recorded videos that often hide the reality of a product, leading to the common "expectation vs. reality" disappointment. For buyers, this creates a "sticky situation" where they lack the confidence to purchase, fearing that "what they ordered" won't be "what they get."
Static Interaction
Standard platforms offer no way for buyers to verify product quality, fit, or authenticity in real-time before committing to a purchase.
UX Inefficiency
Most live-selling attempts are currently hacked together across social media and separate payment apps, creating a clunky, non-intuitive flow that hinders productivity and leads to high drop-off rates
Broken Buyer–Seller Communication
Most platforms treat commerce as a one-way transaction. There is no space for immediate, back-and-forth dialogue, leaving buyers unable to ask specific questions or see product details on demand before hitting "buy."
Research
I combined qualitative and quantitative methods to understand the gap between current live-commerce solutions and the trust-driven needs of Nigerian shoppers.
Qualitative User Interviews
I conducted direct phone interviews with potential users and the app owner to identify the exact "sticky situations" that occur when buying online and to align on core business objectives.
Competitive Benchmarking
I performed a UX and visual design analysis of industry leaders like Whatnot and Tilt to pinpoint where their global models fail to address localized trust barriers and communication gaps.
Stakeholder Analysis
By working closely with the product owner, I identified technical bottlenecks in existing "clunky" payment flows and mapped out the requirements for a scalable, modular infrastructure.
User Consensus
Research confirmed that for the Nigerian market, transparency is a higher-value feature than entertainment. Users would only commit to a purchase if the interface provided real-time visual proof and a direct line of communication with the seller.
Solution
I designed Popcart, a trust-centered live commerce platform that eliminates the "ordered vs. received" gap. By merging real-time video with a frictionless bidding system, I created an environment where transparency is built into the transaction. A modular design system ensures the platform scales seamlessly across diverse product categories while maintaining a high-energy, community-driven feel.
Progressive Product Disclosure
A step-by-step onboarding flow for merchants that reduces cognitive load when listing new inventory, ensuring data accuracy without overwhelming the seller.
Interactive Live Bidding
I integrated real-time video streaming with an overlay bidding system, allowing buyers to engage directly with merchants and place instant bids without leaving the stream.
